First Pawn Loves Diamonds!

To quote the late great Miss Marilyn Monroe “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”. While I am sure of course that she loved the sparkle, glitz, and glamour of a beautiful diamond piece it wasn’t the jewelry itself she was touting the praise of.

The very thinly veiled lyric translates to the idea that if you have a stock of diamonds, no matter what circumstance may come about a girls got a financial cushion to fall back on should she need it. If times became tough you could liquidate and not have to struggle.

This advice still holds true today. Diamonds are a beautiful precious stone that never looses value. One of the quickest and easiest ways to change over your stones for cash is to visit a pawn shop.

Diamonds are eye catching, sought after, coveted, and there is never a shortage of those looking to buy. This is the reason that pawn shops are so happy to buy diamonds from you when you come in looking to sell. Diamonds are popular with pawn shops because they are one of the higher ticket items. Higher priced items leave more room for not only mark up but for bargaining.

Want a top price offer? Know the value.

You’ll want to do your own research before selling your diamond jewelry. If you have GIA certificate that was given to you at the time of purchase, you’ll want to bring that with you. If you don’t have or cant find any associated certificate you may want to get an appraisal in writing before heading to the pawn shop. Its a great non arguable bargaining chip.

If your diamond is not just a stand alone stone but rather in a setting, a jeweler can also estimate the quality and weight of the metal setting. This is important information in addition to knowing the cut, clarity, and karats the diamond itself.

From the estimate, you’ll know what the worth is to a retailer. Do not expect to get the retail price from the pawnbroker. Retail sales figures include mark ups to match what you would pay in a full price jewelry store.

TIP: If you don’t need the money right away you might want to consider selling your piece on consignment. On a consignment, because the pawnbroker doesn’t have to assume the risk of buying a costly item without the promise of a buyer, you can often receive more for your item when  a sale does come to fruition. At the time of the sale, the pawnbroker will then take his cut from the overall sale price.
